SLUMGULLION

"We can never see Christianity from the catechism:---from the pastures, from a boat in the pond, from amidst the songs of songbirds we possibly may.  Cleansed by the elemental light and wind, steeped in the sea of beautiful forms which the field offers us, we may chance to cast a right glance back upon biography."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A certain tendency to insanity has always attended the opening of the religious sense in men, as if they had been blasted with excess of light."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion--several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight.  He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven....The higher animals have no religion.  And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter.  I wonder why?  It seems questionable taste.
Mark Twain

“I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's.”
Mark Twain

“No chemist has prospered in the attempt to crystallize a religion.”
Emerson

SLUMGULLION

I’ll not sleep with a smidgen of religion,
Or sit with one iota of superstition!
Just because many myriads do
Doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do,
Or should be done by all of the hullaballoo!
The hullaballoo!
Give me slumgullion!
It will do!
Give me slumgullion!
It will do!
Wisdom can be sublime
Without religious rhyme!
Humanity will remain deaf, mute and blind
If it’s only religion that dwells within its
Mind!
Give me sweet slumgullion,
Golden bullion of the soul!
All that you can find!
It will do!
It will do!
To hell with the hullaballoo!
